PowerCenter 8.5 Upgrade FAQs


Are there any resources that can guide me when upgrading to PowerCenter 8.5?

What PowerCenter versions can be directly upgraded to 8.5?
You can upgrade to PowerCenter 8.5 directly from version 7.0, 7.1.x, and 8.1.1.Refer to Upgrade and Configuration Overview > Upgrading PowerCenter in the PowerCenter 8.5 Configuration Guide for a complete matrix of all compatible upgrade paths.
Is the upgrade to PowerCenter 8.5 a complete upgrade or is it like a service pack, a partial upgrade?
PowerCenter 8.5 is a major release. The upgrade to 8.5 is a complete upgrade (like upgrading from the 7.1.x to the 8.1.x release) and it is not a service pack (like 8.1.1 SP1 or SP2).
When upgrading to PowerCenter 8.5 does the repository need to be upgraded?
The PowerCenter repository must be upgraded when upgrading to PowerCenter 8.5.Additionally the repository users must be upgraded. For more information refer Upgrading PowerCenter > Upgrade Users and Groups in the PowerCenter Configuration Guide.
Can I install PowerCenter 8.5 in the same directory as a previous version of PowerCenter?
It is not recommended to install PowerCenter 8.5 on the same directory as the previous version. Installation of the new version overwrites the existing directory and you might lose any important files that you have in the directory. If you would like to preserve the same name, rename your existing directory and then install the 8.5 product.
Are the disk space and machine requirements different for 8.5?
The disk space and machine requirements have increased for 8.5. More disk space is required compare to all previous versions including 8.1.x.The complete set of minimum system requirements and database user requirements are documented under After You Install > Verify Prerequisites in the PowerCenter 8.5 Configuration Guide.
When upgrading to PowerCenter 8.5 must all components (client, services, etc.) be upgraded?
All components (client tools, Informatica Services) must be upgrade to PowerCenter 8.5.
Where can I find the new features and enhancements of PowerCenter 8.5?
All the new features and enhancements are documented in the "Version 8.x New Features and Enhancements" chapter of the PowerCenter 8.5 Post-Upgrade Reference.
Can I use the PowerCenter 8.5 version of the client tools to connect to a previous (8.1.1 and earlier) version of the repository?
No, PowerCenter client tools and the repository version should match with each other. You need to upgrade the repository to the current version using the 8.5 Administration Console.
Is a new license required when upgrading to PowerCenter 8.5?
The same PowerCenter 8.1 keys will work with the 8.5 release.All of the options you have licensed for in 8.1 will be automatically available when upgrading to 8.5.This applies to the Data Analyzer and Metadata Manger options as well.No special incremental keys are required when you upgrade to 8.5, the previous license key will be migrated to 8.5.
What are the changes in database and operating system support in PowerCenter 8.5?
The following operating systems compatibility changes are taking place in PowerCenter 8.5:
Red Hat Linux 3.x is no longer supported
AIX 5.3 5L is now supported
The following database versions are now supported in PowerCenter 8.5:
DB2 8.1 FixPak 11
DB2 9.1
Informix 10 (source and target only)
Sybase IQ 12.7
Sybase ASE 12.5.1
Teradata v2R6.2 (source and target only)
The following database versions are no longer supported in PowerCenter 8.5:
Oracle 8i
Sybase IQ 12.4.3
What happened to the PowerCenter Connect/PowerConnect products?
Starting with the 8.5 version, all PowerCenter Connect products have been renamed PowerExchange.For example, PowerCenter Connect for SAP NetWeaver is now PowerExchange for SAP NetWeaver.
What versions of PowerExchange are compatible with PowerCenter 8.5?
PowerExchange Client 8.5 is compatible with PowerCenter 8.5. Prior versions are not compatible.
What versions of Data Quality are compatible with PowerCenter 8.5?
Data Quality 8.5 SP1 is compatible with PowerCenter 8.5. Prior versions are not compatible.
What versions of Data Explorer are compatible with PowerCenter 8.5?
Data Explorer is an independent product. All supported versions of Data Explorer are compatible with PowerCenter 8.5.
